چکیده

The high efficiency of diesel engines, their low operating costs, high durability and reliability have provided them with a leadership role in the heavy-duty vehicle market. Recently, diesel engines also achieved a growing share of the light-duty vehicle market, especially in those areas where fuel costs are high. This trend of growth of the diesel market requires a careful evaluation of the related environmental effects. The most important pollutants formed at the exhaust gases of diesel engines are particulate matters (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxides (CO). Dieselpowered vehicles, because of their high thermal efficiency, emit less CO and unburned hydrocarbons than gasolinefueled vehicles, but the emission of soot particulates and NOx are still high. PM has arguably the widest range of potential environmental impacts, including health effects, climate change, ecological effects, and visibility. In this study, particulate matter and its effect to the environment, particulate matter emission regulations, diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate filters, regeneration techniques of diesel particulate filters, and particulate matter emission control methods are investigated.
